Before you actually begin to draw or paint as an art student , for educational purposes or as a hobby;it is essential to understand the importance of shading & blending .Now the question appears what is shading & why is so important in drawing?
"Shading is an art used to show the depth of a drawing."
When we draw realistically ,it is actually conversion of something which is
two-dimensional to appear as three-dimensional through shading. This purpose is achieved by practice and basic understanding of lights and dark falling over the object and casting shadows.

Smooth Shading
is done by working in layers and adjusting the pressure of pencil stroke which results in blending of the tones.
here it is important to understand the value scale
VALUE SCALE
The value scale is a system of organizing values. It consists of nine values ranging from white to black, with several shades of gray in between. These shades of gray make up the “meat” of a drawing, and help to create the illusion of depth and three-dimensionality.

Smooth shading needs practice,it may take some time but will definitely bring benefits in long term.
